CONDUCTIVITY TYPES OF FIBC BAGS

There are four different categories of Super Sacks, Jumbo Bags, or FIBC bags based on conductivity levels of various materials starting from Type A, Type B, Type C, and Type D. FIBCs come in all shapes and sizes, and the bags can be custom-made to your requirements.

Polypropylene woven fabric is susceptible to static charges, so controlling static electricity is crucial. The presence of combustible dust around the FIBC bags or the flow of substances can result in a buildup of static electricity during the filling and discharging process of FIBC bags that can put the whole operation at risk, including workers' or employees' safety.

We at Big Pack Global help you choose the right type of bags as we follow the guidelines of "The International Electrotechnical Commission" (IEC) combined with the ISO 21898 guidelines to ensure our customers' safety.

Type A FIBC Bag
  • Ideal for products with MIE >1000 mj.
  • Transportation of non-flammable products.
  • Suitable to be used where flammable solvents and gases are not present.
Type A

Bulk Bags are economical and could be your best bet if the material is non-flammable and when there are no flammable solvents or gases present around the bags during filling, discharging transportation, and storage of the bags.

The static charge occurs when the Bulk bags bruise against each other, or the product inside the bag gets rubbed against the inside surface during the movement or in the course of the filling and discharging process. The lack of defense against static electricity makes the Type A Bulk Bags unsafe to transport any combustible material.

Big Pack Global can supply highly customized bags per our customers’ demands. Please contact us for a customized quotation on sales@bigpackglobal.com or fill out the “Request A Quote” form to get pricing from India.

Type B

bulk bags are the most popular bags in the FIBC industry; they are similar to Type A bulk bags and are made of virgin PP woven non-conductive materials; however, these bags are insulated with properties with a surface breakdown voltage of up to 6kV

These bags can prevent sparks and propagating brush discharges. Still, type B Bulk bags cannot be considered anti-static bags due to their inability to dissipate static electricity. We recommend not to use the bags in environments that may contain flammable solvents or gases.

Type B FIBC Bag
  • They are permitted in dust zones 21-22 with MIE > 3 mJ.
  • Useful for the prevention of combustible dust air mixtures.
  • Ideal for transportation of dry, flammable, and non-flammable products/powders.
  • Not supposed to be used in environments surrounding flammable solvents or gases.
Type C FIBC Bag
  • They are permitted in dust zones 21-22 and gas zones 1-2 (explosion groups IIA/IIB).
  • Useful for the prevention of combustible dust air mixtures.
  • Ideal for transportation of dry, flammable products/powders when a good ground connection is present.
  • Designed to be used in environments surrounding flammable solvents, combustible dust, flammable vapors, or gases greater than or equal to 0.14mj.
Type C

bags are also known as Groundable FIBC bags or conductive FIBCs. Type C bags are made using conductive inter-connected film tapes to ground the electrostatic charge that may develop during the filling or discharging process. The bags’ ability to quickly ground any electrostatic charge that may build up during the filling and discharging process makes it a safer option on the conductivity list of FIBC bags. A user must always ensure that the bag is grounded and the bags’ inter-connected conductive carbon black tape circuit is not damaged.

Type C bags are best known for keeping away brush discharges, dissipating static electricity, and protecting sparks/PBDs. All the bags are produced under our strict quality supervision have to go through grounding detector tests, ensuring that all parts of the bag, including the loops, are well connected and should ground the static charge safely.

Type D

bags are made from static protective fabric containing interwoven static interwoven threads designed to prevent the formation of incendiary sparks or brush discharges without grounding.

The bags’ ability to safely dissipate static electricity in the atmosphere makes them unique to safe conductive packaging options. The operator or user needs to ensure that the Type D bag is not used when it shows signs of contamination or when its surface is covered with water, grease, or any other substance that is conductive in nature.

We recommend using Type D bags in conditions where combustible dust is generated during the handling of the bags or might b present in the environment, which could spark an explosion. We provide complete technical assistance to our customers to find out whether they need the Type D bags or not as the investment on these bags is higher than all other options available .

Type D FIBC Bag
  • They are permitted in dust zones 21-22 and gas zones 1-2 (explosion groups IIA/IIB with MIE > 0.14mj) and nd where charging currents ≤3 µA.
  • Useful for the prevention of combustible dust air mixtures.
  • Ideal for transportation of dry, flammable products/powders, and it does not require earthing.
  • All conductive objects including personnel shall be earthed during filling and emptying operations (see IEC TS 0079-32-1 for guidance on earthing)
